Literary Namjooning is dedicated to Hema’s sister, Suma, who unfortunately passed on last year at the age of 46. Suma was so many things--an engineer, an entrepreneur, a reader, a mom, a well-read, witty, intelligent, kind goofball who also loved traveling.
Suma was happiest while pursuing her creative passions and always encouraged others to follow their calling. She was a ray of light to a lot many people who were lucky to cross paths with her. She is deeply missed, and Hema feels blessed to have had such a bright soul for a sister albeit for a short time.

But why namjooning, though?
The idea for this magazine was undoubtedly inspired by the way Suma lived her life and to honor her values of slowing down, disconnecting, being in tune with nature, making art, and single tasking--which we realized, is also the very essence of namjooning--a verb fashioned after Kim Namjoon, the inspirational leader of the superstar K-pop band, Bangtan Sonyeondan or BTS.

A K-pop idol with the heart of a poet, through his music and his words, Namjoon personifies wisdom and comfort for many of us around the world.
In this era of burnout and grief over personal losses and world events, we firmly believe that namjooning is essential to keep ourselves sane and grounded.
So disconnect for a bit, and go namjooning! Take a walk, lose yourself in those woods, or that old dusty bookstore, ride a bike, visit an art gallery, paint, draw, or do nothing at all, and see what comes to you in solitude. Write about it, and send it to us!

We promise to give your words our undivided attention and care.
